VIDEO: Community pays tribute to Sonja Ritchie

The 72-year-old Pinetown woman who was shot in a home invasion on Monday evening (2 April) died in hospital the next day.

PADFIELD Park Neighbourhood Watch together with Blue Security Community TV gathered outside Sonja Ritchie’s home today, 7 April to honour her after she passed away in hospital from her injuries sustained during a house robbery.

Sonja was shot when three armed suspects entered the home she rents in Padfield, Pinetown on Monday, 2 April.

A gunfight ensued after the homeowner and his wife heard loud screams at around 7.45pm.

“The homeowner went to inspect and heard the tenant crying for help and saw three men inside the building attacking the woman,” said Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele.

One of the three suspects was also shot dead by the homeowner.

“The other suspect was shot in the head and was taken to hospital. The victim (Sonja) was shot in the abdomen. A third suspect escaped in a getaway car that was parked outside the yard,” added Manqele.

Police are still searching for the third suspect while the second one is under police guard in hospital.
