ROAD CLOSURES: Thousands expected to join Zuma protest in Durban

Durban Metropolitan Police Services is calling for motorists to plan their routes carefully, ahead of the planned march by former President Jacob Zuma’s supporters tomorrow.

THE defenders of Radical Economic Transformation believes that Zuma fans will be out in their thousands, following former president Jacob Zuma’s appearance before the High Court in Durban tomorrow.

Members of the defenders of Radical Economic Transformation (RET) campaign have vowed to shut down Durban in support of the case, State vs Zuma pending the 16 charges related to corruption, money laundering, racketeering and fraud.

Siboniso Khomo, one of the organisers of the RET, said the aim of the march was to ‘defend a man who had worked towards economically liberating the country’.

“We believe Zuma is a champion of the RET. The march will be a peaceful one as it is only aimed at defending RET. Zuma’s prosecution has nothing to do with him personally but is aimed at ensuring that RET is not implemented, ” said Khomo.

Khomo said he is unaware of any planned protests in the Highway area but is expecting roads in Durban to be affected by the peaceful protest tomorrow.

The march is expected to begin at King Dinizulu Park at 8am, proceeding east along Dr Pixley KaSeme (West) Street, turning right into Yusuf Dadoo (Grey) Street, and left into Margaret Mncadi Avenue (Victoria Embankment) where participants will use the grassed area directly opposite the High Court.

Metro police Spokesman, Parboo Sewpersad said, “We appeal to motorists to plan their routes carefully for tomorrow and to practice patience in the expected traffic congestion. Motorists should also find alternative routes where possible and stay away from the High Court precinct, ie. the entrance and exit of the Nkosi Albert Luthuli Freeway ( M4 Southern Freeway), Joseph Ndluli (Russell) Street and Margaret Mncadi Avenue.”

He added that Metro Police will be on hand to assist motorists, divert traffic and ensure the safety of all road users.
