Young professional pursues her dreams abroad

The former deputy head girl at Waterfall College received a 75 per cent scholarship to study at Augustana College in America.

WATERFALL College’s 2017 deputy head girl, Noluthando Buthelezi, is excited about her new international challenge as she was accepted to study international business at Augustana College in Illinois, USA with 75 per cent of her tuition fees covered by the Founders Scholarship.

This is a dream come true for Noluthando.

“I have always loved the idea of being able to work in the corporate world and to work on an international scale, especially because I studied IEB business studies for matric,” she said.

Noluthando originally planned to study at NYU in New York, but during the application process found out about Augustana College and the opportunities the degree would offer.

“I immediately applied and I also applied for the international students’ scholarship. In January, I received my acceptance letter and found out that I was awarded the Founders Scholarship which covers 75 per cent of my tuition.”

“To apply, I needed to write my SATs, submit school records as well as a personal essay to motivate why I should be accepted to study at Augustana College.”

Noluthando will begin her studies in August 2018 and she will be doing a four-year degree, staying on the campus at Augustana College.

Asked about her career plan beyond her degree, Noluthando said, “I wish to open an international business consulting company that will help medium to large companies from South Africa to compete in the international business market as strong players. Studying international business will give me the skills and experience I need.

“Throughout my four years of studying I will also be doing internships designed specifically for my degree. These internships will be in the USA, and elsewhere.”

Noluthando encouraged South African high school learners to look abroad as well as locally when seeking tertiary study options.

“There is a plethora of opportunities from international universities for South Africans to access. Start looking early to give yourself the time to utilise these opportunities to the best of your ability.”

Mary Buthelezi, Noluthando’s proud mom, said, “Watching Thando grow into this fearless and courageous young lady has been a rewarding journey. Being at Waterfall College really allowed her to grow and to be confident in herself. I cannot express my gratitude enough.”

Noluthando concluded with, “I would also like to add that my mom always told me to run my own race. To not worry myself about what others are doing, but to focus on my journey, my goals and my achievements.”

Principal Jeanette van der Merwe, said, “We are so proud of Noluthando. As deputy head girl, she demonstrated her potential for leadership.

“She has taken the initiative to seek out opportunities, to move out of her comfort zone and to forge a clear pathway into her career. Waterfall College management and staff wish her well with this wonderful new academic challenge.”
