Waterfall’s Andrew shares his heart

Waterfall College's SPAR Star of the Month - March 2018.

GRADE 10 learner, Andrew Done (right), is the Waterfall College’s SPAR Star of the Month. Andrew’s remark, “I enjoy helping people” is evident in how he spends his time.

Andrew is a member of the HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) Committee at Waterfall College. In February, through his involvement with Scouts, Andrew arranged for the school’s involvement in a water collection for Cape Town to assist with the drought crisis affecting the region. 1st Hillcrest Scout and Guide Groups received a call from Gift of the Givers to donate water.

Andrew said, “At one of the Scout meetings on a Friday evening, I saw all these 5l bottles and I thought it would be a good idea for the school to help. Through HOPE, we collected 70 5l bottles, that’s 350 litres.”

Andrew’s Scout involvement started from Cubs. “Scouts focuses on the outdoors but lots of people these days prefer to stay indoors. I like the experience as it gives me the ability to teach the younger guys and learn from the older members,” he said.

Anthea Rawlins of 1st Hillcrest Scout and Guides described Andrew as a conscientious young man who always helps others.

Asked about his plans and aspirations, Andrew said, “In Scouts, I want to get the Springbok Award because that is quite prestigious for my CV. It involves running camps, leading hikes and serving in the community. In school, I am aiming for honours, perhaps for service. I am happy with my academics, but I would like to get an A aggregate.”

Andrew placed second in Grade 9 for Mathematics in 2017 and he made it through to the second round of the Mathematics Olympiad.

His Grade 10 registration teacher, Cindy Baker, said, “Andrew has a genuine, heartfelt, helpful nature. And you won’t forget his wacky sense of humour!”

Andrew’s chosen sport is cross-country and is a founder member of the cross-country club in Waterfall College as he kick-started the sporting activity at the school in 2016, along with three of his classmates.

Andrew also rides in the Amashova cycle race every year. He completed the 35km race once, the 65km race three times and this year in October, he hopes to ride the 106km race.

His parents, Anthony and Tracey Done, said, “We are very proud of Andrew and how he has grown and matured. He has such amazing dreams and we are confident that with faith and determination he will achieve them.”

Andrew’s biggest highlight so far was receiving his first class in Scouts and junior colours for the advanced fitness tests in Grade 8.

Waterfall College’s principal, Jeanette van der Merwe, said, “As Waterfall College, we actively encourage service to the community. Well done to Andrew for his positive attitude towards helping others and striving to achieve his personal best. I look forward to seeing him pursue leadership opportunities in the school as he progresses towards matric.”
