Student protest disrupts classes at UKZN Westville campus

Academic programmes have been suspended at the campus and police will be monitoring the situation until Friday, 23 March.

CLASSES have been suspended at UKZN Westville following a protest earlier today by students demanding free education and free WiFi.

According to Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele, police were called to monitor the situation when the protest got out of control.

Manqele said the students started throwing stones at passing cars.

“I was informed that the students’ issues involved the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), free education and free WiFi. The situation is currently stable at the moment as police are monitoring the campus, but lectures have since been suspended until further notice.

“The management at UKZN Westville and the police will continue guiding the situation until Friday which marks the end of the term,” said Manqele.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
