Watercrest Mall debunks drug rumours

Watercrest Mall has a zero tolerance policy to illegal substances. Perpetrators caught on site will be apprehended and detained.

RUMOURS of drugs being sold on Watercrest Mall’s premises were disproved during Highway Mail’s recent visit to the shopping complex.

Watercrest Mall’s centre management noted they were aware that illegal substances were being sold in the Waterfall area.

A number of steps were put in place to combat this from taking place within the mall’s premises.

“The mall has state-of-the-art CCTV, including an early warning system for known offenders. Our security officers are on alert 24/7, closely monitoring any untoward behaviour and they investigate accordingly.

“We also benefit from close relationships with our local community watch groups, which gives us the advantage of quality information, quicker reaction and a high success rate,” said the mall’s marketing officer, Elizabeth Roux.

Roux noted the mall has a zero tolerance approach to illegal substances.

“If apprehended on site, the perpetrators are detained and the SAPS are asked to intervene. In the event the perpetrator is under age, he/she is detained until a parent or guardian is contacted and can be accountable for them.

“Please take note these steps are applicable to any undesirable actions including and not limited to drugs, marijuana, shoplifting, vandalism, underage drinking and smoking.”

“By law, these perpetrators need to be caught in the act, preferably with evidence or an eye witness, and cannot be reported to the SAPS otherwise,” concluded Roux.

The centre management appealed to the Upper Highway community to report any eye-witness accounts, or are aware of any illegal acts, to the Hillcrest SAPS on 031 765 9100.
