Science boffins raise the bar

Three learners from St Mary's DSG were in the top 19 in the country for a science benchmark test.

ST Mary’s DSG congratulated Ellen Dawson, Megan Evans and Hannah Norcott as the trio were recently placed in the top one per cent of candidates in the Grade 11 IeBT Physical Sciences Benchmark Test.

More than 1 000 candidates across South African IEB Schools took the test.

“This is an exceptional achievement as only 19 learners made the top one per cent and of that we had three of the top achievers. This placed St Mary’s second only to St Alban’s College. We are the top placed all-girls IEB school in these benchmark tests throughout South Africa,” said St Mary’s DSG’s marketing and communications administrator, Lisa Abbott.

Of the St Mary’s 2017 matrics, 47 learners wrote physical science and 20 received a distinction.

In September last year, the school was identified by the University of Pretoria for ranking among the 16 top-performing schools in South Africa for both mathematics and physical science.
