New forum to empower Highway youth

The Highway Youth Forum works with the Pinetown Rotary club to empower young people.

HIGHWAY Youth Forum, the brainchild of a Pinetown Boys’ learner, Sitholile Sithole, is reaching greater heights.

The non-profit, community service-based youth organisation under the Pinetown Rotary Club wing, launched this forum last Friday where learners from Pinetown Girls’ High School, Westville Boys’ High School, Westville Girls’ High School, Kloof High School and Ziphathele High School attended.

Sitholile said the council is made up of Grade 11 learners from schools around the Highway district who are part of their schools community service club.

“The council is run by a democratic hierarchy of students, and governed by Rotarians (an adult steering committee from a Rotary Club).”

Sitholile said the forum’s motto for this year is, ‘I am, the change’.

“We believe that we can have a larger impact as we all work together as schools and this would be just the beginning of the greatest youth movement to come out of the Highway District as we envision hundreds upon thousands of young philanthropists making a change in the future, but it all depends on what we do now,” he said.
