Municipal clinics offer youth friendly services

The Adolescent and Youth Friendly Services (AYFS) package is now offered at Mpola Clinic, Tshelimnyama Clinic, New Germany Clinic and Mariannridge Clinic.

MUNICIPAL clinics have introduced an Adolescent and Youth Friendly Services (AYFS) package launched by the municipality’s health unit at the Pinetown Clinic last year October.

The AYFS was introduced to improve the optimal health status of youth and adolescents in eThekwini.

This came after realising that most young people are too scared to visit and get assistance at the clinics because they are afraid of being judged. This means they don’t get the necessary education on and guidance about STDs, HIV and early pregnancy.

According to Health Unit deputy head, Busi Grootboom, a recent research revealed that young people wanted a welcoming and friendly facility where they could drop in and be attended to quickly.

These services will be headed by a ‘champion’, but all the clinic staff, from the security guard at the gate to the nurses, will be orientated and trained to understand this service and also offer their support.

The target group is people between the ages of 10 to 24 years and service hours will be 7.30am to 4pm from Monday to Friday.

The clinics that currently offer these services are Mpola Clinic, Tshelimnyama Clinic, New Germany Clinic, Mariannridge Clinic and Pinetown Clinic.
