Pinetown woman defends herself with kitchen knife

When the woman fought off the intruders, one of them picked up an audio speaker from a hi-fi system and hit her over the head.

A 54-YEAR-OLD woman defended herself with a kitchen knife when a gang of men entered her Farningham Ridge home yesterday afternoon.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios said an armed response officer responded to the scene of the incident in Fyfe Road in Farningham Ridge at around 1.20pm.

“Four suspects forced their way into the home by kicking in the burglar guards on the lounge window. The gang ransacked the property and tried to remove a flat screen television off the wall while one of the suspects kept the woman at bay.”

Mathios said the woman managed to press her remote panic alarm. “When the other four suspects focused their attention on her, she grabbed a kitchen knife to defend herself. One of the intruders picked up an audio speaker from a hi-fi system and hit her over the head, causing a deep-cut injury.

“Disturbed by the unexpected resistance, the suspects turned and fled out of the same window that they had used to enter the property. It is understood the suspects may have fled in an old model white Jetta. ER24 paramedics treated the injured woman at the scene before transporting her to hospital,” said Mathios.

Pinetown SAPS, Blue Security and members of the Pineridge Neighbourhood Watch team attended the scene of the crime.
