Stable donation highlights need

The South African Riding for the Disabled Association has 10 stables and each stable will cost R3000.

IN memory of their horse that was put down, a Hillcrest couple has made a donation towards the refurbishment of a stable at South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA).

Ashleigh and Mark Roche, who own Ash Events and Promotions, said they have always had a passion for helping riders with disabilities.

“We saw SARDA as the perfect place to donate to and assist after our horse, Rocco, was put down due to old age.

“We also want to create awareness about the therapeutic riding programme which is offered at SARDA. Most people are not aware of the therapy that animals such as horses can give to children,” said Ashleigh.

The SARDA stable doors are falling apart and needs to be fixed.

SARDA Durban provides a unique therapeutic riding programme to schools for children with special needs. There is no charge for the schools or families.

To ensure the children gain maximum benefit from therapeutic riding in a safe environment, each class is led by a qualified instructor with a volunteer team assisting as side walkers or pony leaders.

SARDA volunteer, Mary Nel, said they provide these riding programmes to children with disabilities in schools around the greater Durban area.

“We have 10 stables which are in a very bad condition and need a facelift, the doors needs to be fixed, we need to paint them and we will also need to use a high pressure machine to clean the floors.”

Nel said each stable will cost R3 000 to fix and there are nine left after the donation from Ashleigh and Mark which they are truly grateful for.

The couple also challenged other businesses to be part of this worthy cause.

The association will host a training for volunteers on Friday, 2 February from 9am to 11am. Interested people can contact Julie Ponquet on 083 6422 583.
