Rabid dog bites two women in Gillitts
Highway residents are urged to vaccinate their pets.
AFTER two women were bitten by a rabid dog during a rescue attempt on Wednesday evening, the Gillitts 2 Community Watch has urged others who attempted to help to also seek medical attention.
The dog was seen running up Old Main Road at about 5pm, through peak hour traffic.
According to the Gillitts 2 Community Watch committee member, Valerie Nicolson, a number of people were trying to corner and catch the male dog.
Two women caught the frightened pooch. One was bitten on the hand and the other was nipped on the arm.
The dog had blood on its muzzle prior to being captured. It was taken to the Kloof Village Vet by a veterinary assistant who happened to be passing by.

The dog was sedated and kept overnight for observation. The next day it needed to be euthanised as it was showing symptoms of rabies.
This was later confirmed by the state vet.
The two women bitten by the dog received a tetanus injection as well as a rabies vaccine.
Gillitts 2 Community Watch committee member, Valerie Nicolson, urged the Highway community to have their pets vaccinated.
