Good Samaritans help mom and daughter in Pinetown attempted hijacking

The hijackers were arrested with the help of the community and security guards.

TWO men who tried to hijack a woman in Pinetown were arrested with the help of the community and security guards.

Pinetown cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele said a  29-year old woman from Umlazi was sitting in her car, a white VW Golf GTI at the parking lot outside Knowles Spar on Chancery Lane  when she was approached by a man who pointed at her with an okapi knife and instructed her to get out of the car.

Manqele said the woman who was sitting with her eight year old daughter threw the car keys out of the passenger door.

“During the confrontation between the woman and the one suspect, another man came out of nowhere.

“The woman’s daughter got out of the car and picked up the key from the ground and ran towards the shopping centre. While the child was running the woman helplessly watched the second suspect chasing her child and took the key from her. That’s when the woman got out of her car and started screaming for help,” explained Manqele.

The two men then got into the woman’s car and as they were ready to getaway, people who were close by together with the shopping centre security came to the woman’s rescue.

“Both suspects were arrested by the community and handed over to the police. They were charged with attempted murder and are expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon,” said Manqele.
