STAR College Durban matriculants have yet again produced some excellent results in the 2017 NSC examinations.
Tasha Govender was placed fourth in the 2017 NSC top five learners from independent schools and received a laptop and certificate of achievement at the awards ceremony held at the ICC in Durban last Friday.
She achieved nine distinctions in English (80), Afrikaans (87), Maths (91), religious studies (96), engineering, graphics and design (EGD – 95), physical science (99), AP Maths (83), accounting (98) and life orientation (94). She was ecstatic when she received her results and said that all her hard work had paid off.
The Westville resident said she tried to keep a balance in her matric year by focusing on her studies in two sessions, every morning and evening and keep her weekends open to unwind.
“No matter what challenges you face, work hard and smart and you will persevere. Set your priorities straight and work consistently throughout the year,” said Govender.
Her passion for maths, accounting and physical science has guided her into achieving a bursary from Stellenbosch University to study actuarial science. She hopes to learn about risk management and work in the insurance field. ‘
She thanked her family, friends and Star College (where she has been since Grade 3) who supported her through her schooling years.
Another matriculant, Taruna Rambaros also excelled in her 2017 NSC examinations, achieving nine distinctions. She also looks forward to her studies in actuarial science at UCT this year.
From rural to actuarial
Another proud moment for Star College was when Sfundo Bless Manyathi achieved eight distinctions.
After being recognised by many people and organisations, Sfundo was given a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet with Star College which opened doors to a new and improved life for him. He was an orphan from a relatively poor township (Ntuzuma) and was given a full bursary to study through Star College’s development programme at the school where he was covered financially for fees, books and dormitory.
“Despite Star College being the best thing that has ever happened to me, it also gave way to a shower of new of challenges which demanded one to be strong and enduring. One of the challenges was trying to fit in, socially and academically. It took a while for me to change my colours from street smart to academically smart, making new friends all around the school and most importantly, knowing and loving my teachers,” said Sfundo.
He said the least he could do for both Star College was make them proud which he did at all cost from participating in Olympiads to participating in innovative competitions such as the Eskom Expo.
In the end, not only did he make Star College proud, he also put smiles on his family, teachers and himself.
“I was able to score eight As in accounting, mathematics, Zulu, life orientation, physical science, life science, engineering graphics and design and AP Maths, in the NSC exams out of the nine subjects I did. These distinctions and all my achievements in the school are just a mere thanks to Star College and its loving staff,” said Sfundo.
Now he’s off to yet another new odyssey- the University of Cape Town to major in actuarial science.
