MEC warns motorists to be extra vigilant when passing overhead bridges

There have been three reports of rock throwing from overhead bridges in the last three weeks.

THE MEC for Transport, Community and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, has warned motorists to be extra vigilant when driving past overhead bridges on the roads.

He said the warning stemmed from the unfortunate and criminal act of rock dropping by nefarious people that led to the death of two children aged between 15 and 7 years on the Tongaat Bridge, who were travelling with their father on Wednesday, 27 December.

It is believed the driver was passing under the bridge when a big stone was thrown on his car, which resulted in the death of the two children.  The father was taken to the nearest hospital.  A case of murder was opened pending further investigation.

A second incident was reported after Westbrooke resident, Aliza Cilliers, was travelling towards King Shaka International Airport last Thursday, when a large rock was hurled at her vehicle shattering her passenger window. Luckily, she escaped unharmed.

A 26-year-old man was injured in yet another rock throwing incident on the N2 on Saturday evening. Netcare 911 paramedics responded to the incident just after 10.30pm just past the same Tongaat toll bridge.

Luckily the man only suffered soft tissue damage to his shoulder as the rock landed on the passenger side of the car.

Kaunda  warned motorists to be extra careful when travelling.

“We want to condemn the barbaric act that has resulted to the death of these innocent lives.  This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated at all.  We cannot afford to lose lives on the road because of people who are ruthless and nefarious,” said Kaunda.

He appealed to all those who might have information on this incident to come forward and assist the police.  On behalf of the government, he sent his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.
