Pinetown detective takes on four gun-wielding men, injures two

The men were charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

TWO men were arrested  following a shooting incident at the corner of Chapel and Crompton Street in Pinetown on Thursday afternoon.

The two suspects were arrested after a detective from Pinetown SAPS, who was driving in slow moving traffic, noticed four gun-wielding men banging the windows of a Mercedes Benz in front of him.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele said the detective immediately stopped his vehicle and tried to intercept, not knowing that the four men would open fire on him.

“When the four armed men opened fire on the detective, he took cover and retaliated, injuring two of the men.

“One man was injured on his back and could not flee. He was arrested on scene. The second one was injured but managed to flee the scene while the other two escaped,” said Manqele.

The second injured man was arrested while hiding in a public hospital.

“Two 9mm pistols with live rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene and the men were charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” added Manqele.

Both men are in hospital under police guard. The police are still searching for the remaining two.
