WATCH: Canine rescues missing man from Hillcrest reserve

Nico Paulsen (63) was trapped in a rocky crevice. Luckily he was unhurt but his rescuers had to carry him out of the reserve.

AN elderly man who went for a walk in the Belvedere Conservancy, a private nature reserve in Hillcrest, got disorientated and soon found himself off the path around 2pm on Thursday, 4 January.

Andreas Mathios, community and marketing liaison for Blue Security, said the man had not returned home by 7pm so SAPS Search and Rescue were notified by Dave Leppan from the Fire Department.

He said Meditech ER notified Rescuetech, a volunteer rope rescue group, to assist with searching the vast bush together with the Umhlali K9 dog unit that specialises in searching for human related incidents.

“Within 20 minutes of entering the bush the K9 dog found the shivering man, Nico Paulsen (63) trapped in a rocky crevice. He was unhurt and his rescuers had to carry him after Er24 ALS paramedics stabilised him at the site he was found,” said Mathios.
