Security cameras installed in Pinetown and Westville

The benefits of License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology includes the flagging of unusual or suspicious vehicles in the area.

AFTER launching the Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) technology in Durban, Fidelity ADT has rolled out the project by installing these cameras in key strategic areas in the Westville and Pinetown communities.

District community development manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Rian Buys, said community members have already seen the benefits associated with the technology and ADT is incredibly proud of the success shown by the cameras implemented thus far.

He said the benefits of LPR includes the flagging of unusual or suspicious vehicles in the area as well as alerting the relevant roleplayers when noticed.

“All reports are handled by our dedicated CCTV control room and our Durban based Community Control Room (CCR) that is dedicated to neighbourhood watches. They then dispatch or inform the relevant authorities in case of an emergency,” said Buys.

Fidelity ADT has implemented three cameras in the Westville and Pinetown area, with another four cameras to be implemented soon.

These cameras are placed at strategic intersections which serve as entrances to specific neighbourhoods.

“We remain positive that the LPR cameras will continue to improve the safety and security of local residents and will make a significant difference to the safety of the general public.

“Going forward we aim to involve more role players to further broaden our scope of resources to support the community. The idea is to encourage information sharing among all stakeholders via LPR which will improve security measures among all private security companies as well as local authorities,” said Buys.
