AFTER being forced to live in unpleasant conditions due to a leaking manhole or sewage pipe, a concerned resident has questioned the competence of the contractors of the Go!Durban project.
A Qashana Khuzwayo Road (Shepstone Road), New Germany resident, who asked not to be named, told Highway Mail this has has been going on for weeks and its getting worse.
“We have to keep our windows and doors closed day in and day out because of the smell, and the mosquitoes are the worst. We are being eaten alive.
“We have small children in this area, and there are people who wait here for their transport and there are contractors who are working on this road. This is a health hazard for so many people, not just the residents.”
The resident said she read on many occasions about the officials bragging about this project and how close it is to completion, but it does not show.

Since this project started, they have dug the same spot about four times, according to the resident.
“Every time when we think that they are done, they come and dig it up again which creates the leak. We do not even know who to report this matter to anymore as there seems to be no one who wants to take charge,” said a resident.
The Highway Mail sent an email to the eThekwini Municipality asking about the delays and the reason for digging up the roads and head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa, said: “As a caring City, eThekwini Municipality has a dedicated team of staff members who strive to provide superior service to all City residents. Service delivery remains our key priority. Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention. The contractor is currently on site addressing the matter.”

The municipality urges residents to continue reporting illegal water connections and water leaks to the number 080 1313013. Residents can also send a sms to the number 43554 to report water leaks or email Eservices@durban.gov.za
The quicker eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS) is informed of a leak, the quicker they can respond and address the matter to prevent further water loss.”
