Another fuel price hike dampens festive season spirits

The Department of Energy said the hike was due to the depreciation of the rand against the US dollar under the period under review.

THE holiday season just lost its festive edge with the announcement that the price of petrol will increase by 71 cents tomorrow, Wednesday, 6 December.

The price of diesel will rise between 57 and 60 cents. This comes on the heels of a 29 cent per litre hike in petrol in October this year.

The announcement was made by the Department of Energy who blamed the fuel hike on the international price of petrol, diesel and paraffin increases as well as the weaker rand.

The Department’s statement said the rand had depreciated against the US dollar under the period under review which had led to a higher contribution to the basic fuels price on petrol, diesel and paraffin by 23.15/l, 23.03c/l and 23.34c/l respectively.

Paraffin will increase by 73 cents a litre and the maximum retail price for liquid petroleum gas will increase by 204 cents per kilogram.
