Kwanele cooks up a bursary

The Queensburgh High School learner has always had passion for cooking and whenever his house mum, Gladyse Mkhize, is preparing food in the kitchen, he is always beside her asking questions and offering his help.

MALVERN Child and Youth Care Centre’s Kwanele Hlophe will soon be cooking his dream at the Chefs Training and Innovation Academy.

Kwanele competed in the CTIA ‘Win a Bursary’ cook-off competition to stand a chance to study towards a national diploma.

To enter, Kwanele had to make a video of him cooking and he chose to prepare a tender loin steak with vegetables, and that video got him a place in the finals.

For the finals the animated young cook prepared a prawns and tomato curry dish and even though he never cooked prawns before, it was his winning dish.

The Queensburgh High School learner has always had passion for cooking and whenever his house mum, Gladyse Mkhize, is preparing food in the kitchen, he is always beside her asking questions and offering his help.

Gladyse said as much as Kwanele loves being in the kitchen, he definitely doesn’t stay to wash the dishes.

On the weekends each house prepares its own meals and that is when Kwanele gets the opportunity to show off his amazing cooking skills.

“Cooking is in my blood, all I do is think about food,” he said.

According to the housemates, Kwanele loves eating as much he loves making food.

His biggest dream is to one day go to London and meet celebrity chef, restaurateur, and television personality, Gordon Ramsay. Even though he doesn’t have much exposure to international cooking shows he still can make impressive top chef dishes.

The centre puts child development above everything and despite their financial difficulties, they put their children first and ensure they do well.

They are immensely proud of Kwanele’s achievements and wish him well in his studies.
