Cheleigh pairs kindness with shoes

The nine year old has collected more than 600 pairs of shoes with the help of her parents, close family, friends and even strangers.

CHELEIGH MacDonald, a little girl with big dreams for the less fortunate, collects shoes for a world of happy feet and grateful hearts.

The Parkside Primary School learner heard of this charitable concept after seeing another small boy from Johannesburg collect shoes for the underprivileged and she wanted to do the same for children in Durban.

She started collecting shoes in July this year and after collecting them, her plan is to drop them off at children’s homes.

The nine year old has collected more than 600 pairs of shoes with the help of her parents, close family, friends and even strangers.

When she is not sorting out shoes in sizes and styles, she enjoys playing hide and seek with her friends and she also dances with a group in her neighbourhood.

She said her friends think that it is very cool that she helps other people.

“After collecting shoes I want to collect clothes,” she said.

When asked what she wanted to be when she is older she said she wants to be someone who helps and takes care of people.

“I want people who see the work that I do to be inspired and to also start caring for others,” she said.

Cheleigh is also a lover of shoes and said she has 20 pairs of her own.

“My favourite pair are my white flip flops with pink and purple hearts that my mum bought for me on my birthday,” she said.

She said that every time she receives a new pair of shoes she gets very happy and that is the kind of feeling she hopes each child that receives the shoes she donates will feel.
