Education MEC speaks out against alcohol and drug abuse at ‘pens-down’ parties

The MEC also asked all learners to behave responsibly as the holidays are fast approaching.

AS the National Senior Certificate examinations draw to an end, the MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Mthandeni Dlungwana, has cautioned learners against irresponsible behaviour.

He particularly pointed out the tendency by Grade 12 learners of tearing up and writing on their uniforms on the last day of exams.

“We have observed this unacceptable culture of tearing and writing of messages on school uniform by our learners. We want to inculcate a culture of responsible citizenship by discouraging our learners from this malpractice. With our triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment, we cannot afford to have this practice continuing unabated. We want to ask our learners to ensure that on their last day of exams, they donate their uniforms so that those learners who come from indigent families can benefit from it,” said the MEC.

The MEC also asked all learners to behave responsibly as these holidays are fast approaching.

“Whether it is a holiday or not, learners must conduct themselves in a responsible manner and stay away from irresponsible behaviour. We take a very dim view on the so-called ‘pens down’ events and rave parties where our learners abuse alcohol and drugs, which results in some learners getting raped. We admonish all our learners to stay away from such practices,” added MEC Dlungwana.

The last paper for the 2017 NSC exams is Agriculture Management Practices which will be written on 28 November 2017.
