Shark nets removed from bathing beaches due to bad weather

The shark safety gear would be replaced as soon as the KZNSB is confident it will remain stable.

DUE to the inclement weather, the Sharks Board has removed shark safety gear from the majority of Durban’s bathing beaches.

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board’s operational management team has been monitoring the cut-off low pressure system that is due to affect the weather and sea conditions off KZN later today.

The SA Weather Service issued numerous severe weather warnings and the swell forecasting models that the Board monitors all predict unsettled seas and a strong groundswell of up to 3m.

The head of operations, Mike Anderson-Reade, said, “These unsettled seas and large swells could result in the movement or damage to shark safety gear. With the very busy December season approaching, and in order to minimise any damage or losses of gear, the Sharks Board, in consultation with the affected municipalities, this morning removed shark safety gear at the majority of protected bathing beaches.”

He noted the shark safety gear would be replaced as soon as the seas settled.
