NOW’S your chance to own chunks of Durban’s tourist attractions without having to fork out the big bucks. These include uShaka Marine World, Kingsmead, Kings Park and The Pavilion.

This has been made possible by Winning Moves, the company which manufactured the Durban version and other city editions of Monopoly, under a licence from Hasbro, which produced the Mzanzi board last year.

Robert Osborne, Monopoly development executive and London-based sales manager at Winning Moves said the company made an announcement to do a Durban board in May this year.  Osborne headed the social media campaign and spent most of the last few months here in Durban compiling a list of venues for the board game.

“It has been a real blast here in Durban. We had so many venues to choose from, enough to compile three boards but eventually had to cut it down. The whole board is themed,” said Osborne.

Each property colour on the board game represents a part of Durban. The orange represents retail and shopping centres, pink is sport venues, green is nature venues, light blue represents culture, sea and sky, brown represents heritage sites or religion, yellow represents local leisure attractions and dark blue represents iconic locations, such as Moses Mabhida Stadium and uShaka Marine World.

“The essence of the game was to capture the impression of Durban in 2017,” said Osborne.

He offered a tip for future board players: “Don’t rush to buy the most expensive properties on the board, rather invest (buy and build houses and hotels) on the red and orange properties – that’s where you’ll win.”

The board game is retailing from R590 to R610 at CNA, Musica, Takealot.com, Toy Kingdom, Lute.com and Toyzone.

MONOPOLY first hit shop shelves in 1935 – and since then has been played by more than 500 million people. Today it is played in 111 countries and enjoyed in 43 different languages.
