GO!Durban C3 Corridor paves a road of convenience

The C3 Corridor will run through the Pinetown CBD and is set to create employment and open up extensive business opportunities.

THE newly announced C3 Corridor project will not only create convenience for GO!Durban users, but is set to create opportunities for business owners as well.

The C3 Corridor is a section of transport infrastructure from the north of the city to Pinetown incorporating the integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN) GO!Durban, that will link major residential areas.

DA PR councillor for Ward 13 and 15 and a member of the eThekwini Municipality’s Economic Development and Planning Committee, Marlaine Nair, and central Pinetown ward councillor, Melanie Brauteseth, both welcomed the roll-out of the project.

The intention of the project is to zone municipal land along the corridor and the areas affected are those that fall within half a kilometre on either side of the corridor.

“The project promotes mixed uses of land spaces, for instance a business may also have a training centre or a creche on the same site. The goal is to make various services accessible to people with as little travel as possible,” said Nair.

A few of the areas affected by development are the Pinetown CBD, New Germany, Harmony Heights, Wyebank station, KwaDabeka and the Ulwannde Station.

The land use strategy surrounding the C3 corridor will be submitted to the Economic Development Committee for approval and then be sent for full council adoption.

“This is anticipated to take place in November this year and be rolled out early next year,” said Nair.

Developers will no longer need to apply for rezoning for any development along the corridor.

There will be no fee or waiting period and no objection or appeal.

“There are also opportunities for investment, including public and private partnerships. Those interested should look out for advertisements for the sale of land along the corridor. Once the planning scheme is amended, residents along the corridor may add more dwellings to their properties and receive a rental income,” noted Nair.

Both councillors agreed the tourism and hospitality sectors will experience a boost once the C3 Corridor has been completed.

“I am excited about the employment opportunities the corridor will bring to Pinetown,” said Nair.

She added it was imperative that at least 60 per cent of local labour be employed to work on the project and assured the DA would emphasise this point when the item came before the Economic Development and Planning committee for approval.

Councillor Brauteseth expressed concern regarding the crime in Pinetown and advised that crime be given serious attention.

She added that security cameras across Pinetown must be in working order and regularly monitored.
