Goalie Elijah has exceptional soccer skills

Elijah Stoop is Highbury's October SPAR Star of the Month.

HIGHBURY’S SPAR Star this month is Grade 2 learner, Elijah Stoop.

Elijah was selected for the U9 SuperSport Invitational Soccer team to play in a tournament in Ballito over the October school holidays.

His father, Michael, said the tournament in Ballito was a fantastic experience for the selected boys and they delivered some great results.

“The level of soccer was exceptional. Their main game was against the Gauteng SuperSport touring squad and they managed to come back from being 3-1 down to sneak in a draw at 4-4,” he said.

Elijah has been playing soccer since the age of six at Westville Old Boys’ Soccer Club and he loves playing goalkeeper.

He was awarded Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017.

He played 13 games for the A side this year and managed to keep 11 clean sheets with only three goals being scored against him during the whole season.

He has an exceptional work ethic and trains hard, even during the off season.

His father said he was amazed at the abilities that Elijah displays under pressure during matches, but it all comes from ‘training harder than the rest’.

“We are super proud of Elijah and the way in which he conducts himself on and off the soccer field. Truly a blessing from God,” he said.

Elijah wants to play for Arsenal in the premier league when he is older and his favourite keeper is Petr Cech.

He loves collecting the Premier League soccer cards and he has an amazing wealth of knowledge about which players play for the different clubs.
