River project flows on with cash injection

The money will be used in Phase 3 of the Aller River Project.

THE National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has provided a grant of R769 000 to the Kloof Conservancy (acting as agents for the eThekwini Conservancies Forum) to enable them to continue with the Aller River Project in New Germany/Clermont.

The current Phase 2 of the project is funded by a grant from the University of Cambridge which ends in January 2018.

Chairman of the Kloof Conservancy, Paolo Candotti, said the funding from the NLC will enable them to run Phase 3 to the end of October 2018.

“The Aller River Project is a community based river health project aimed at changing behaviours so that residents who live within the catchment area take co-responsibility with the designated authorities for the health of the river.

“The project team is active in community education, teaching the youth through Eco Clubs and Kidz Clubs, community clean-ups, monitoring of sewerage lines and monitoring of illegal dumping. The team has recently met with the ward structures in Clermont to engage and draw the communities into the process of taking ownership of river health,” said Candotti.

The NLC relies on funds from the proceeds of the National Lottery.

The Lotteries Act guides the way in which NLC funding may be allocated.

The intention of NLC funding is to make a difference to the lives of all South Africans, especially those more vulnerable and to improve the sustainability of the beneficiary organisations.

Available funds are distributed to registered and qualifying non-profit organisations in the fields of charities, arts, culture and national heritage, sport and recreation.
