Old Girls fulfil St Mary’s legacy

A group of past St Mary's DSG learners hosted a fund-raiser that raised R90 000 for the St Mary's Foundation Trust.

THE Guild of St Mary’s Old Girls were excited to hand over the money raised from an annual fund-raising evening for the St Mary’s Foundation Trust.

This year, the Irish Gastro Pub, held at Bellevue Cafe in June, raised R90 000 for the St Mary’s Foundation Trust and R9 000 to a charity selected by the Old Girls’ Committee.

The Foundation Trust was created for the sole purpose of advancing the interests of St Mary’s to be an everlasting school. Its goal is to create a capital fund with the interest earned being used to transform lives through the provision of financial support. The Foundation would like to grow this programme so that it can assist more girls in the years to come.

Their chosen charity, The Inanda Soup Kitchen, is a non-profit organisation created and run by St Mary’s Old Girl, Robyn o’Donovan. It is based next to a church near Inanda Dam and runs every Wednesday, providing between 150 and 180 children with a much-needed hot meal after school. The donation will enable the project to buy fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and grains to continue providing nourishment to these children, and has managed to stretch this to include assisting a handful of the volunteers who work tirelessly in the kitchen preparing meals.

Some of the money was used to buy concrete for a volunteer in the kitchen who has been building a house to safely shelter her family.

“Small acts go a long way and none of this is possible without our people and community. Thank you,” said Robyn.

The Guild of St Mary’s Old Girls thanked all sponsors.
