A cut above the rest

If you're wanting to spruce up your home, create employment and use upcycling to do it - contact Woza Moya for your glass cutting needs.

WOZA Moya, a non-profit income generation project, has expanded its exciting and innovative glass-cutting project.

It’s first client was The Keg and Trout at Oxford Village in Hillcrest.

The eatery was looking for something fresh and trendy to add to the atmosphere of its wine corner.

Woza Moya is widely known for its upcycling projects and gorgeous recycled beer bottle glasses.

Elaine Miller, part owner of the Keg, contacted Woza Moya to see if they would be up to the challenge.

“I saw the idea on Pinterest and immediately thought to ask if it could be done by the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust,” said Elaine.

Relishing the prospect of starting something new, the upcycling team jumped at the opportunity.

Francis Ngaeje started bottle cutting but due to the demand, hired Clive Nene.

The project involved cutting wine bottles for the wall display and whiskey bottles for the light fixtures.

This culminated in a modern, clean finish to the setting. More than 250 bottles needed to be cut for the display.

“You can do so much with bottles. For us, it’s exciting to see it used in an interior as it now expands our product offering to the community and vision going forward, hoping to train other youngsters in the community and create employment,” said Paula Thomson of Woza Moya.

Elaine said, “It is so big and we hope that people catch on to it and support Woza Moya and the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust.”
