City warns of strong gale winds approaching Durban

eThekwini Municipality's head of communication, Tozi Mthethwa said heavy rainfall is also expected this afternoon.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has sent out a warning to residents of two imminent cold fronts approaching Durban today, 12 October. This warning follows Tuesday’s  devastating storm.

According to the Municipality’s head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa, the cold fronts are expected to pass out to sea on the south of the province.

“Associated with these are strong winds which will travel at approximately 58 kilometres per hour. Heavy rainfall is also expected this afternoon,” said Mthethwa.

Residents are requested to please only call the emergency management call centre for emergencies on 031 361 0000.

Meteorologist, Aslam Sardiwallam, of the South African Weather Service confirmed the warning.

“The gale force winds are expected in most KZN coastlines. The wind speed is expected to be between 55 to 70  kilometres per hour, South Westerly. The wind will moderate overnight from the South,” said Sardiwalla.
