Help put a smile on a gogo’s face

The Robin Hood Foundation will host their first 'Mahala Market' in Embo where gogos can shop for free.

THE Robin Hood Foundation (RHF) will be hosting Mahala Markets for gogos for the next few months.

The Clothes for Africa is a Robin Hood Foundation drive for this campaign.

The first market will be set up in Embo and 200 grannies have been invited to attend. They will be able to ‘shop for free’ and choose at least five new outfits.

Megan Coleman, who co-owns Image Insured with her mom, Fay and is a former Miss South Africa who represented South Africa in Miss World and Miss Universe in 2007, said they absolutely love Robin Hood’s idea of the Mahala Market and are so happy to show their support, get involved and make a difference in the community.

“I am sure we all have a few items in our cupboards that we have not worn in a while, what a blessing to know it will make someone less fortunate so happy,” she said.

After RHF’s successful ‘Choose your Shoes’ campaign last year – where the community donated about 10 000 pairs of shoes, they visited a further two communities with all the donations of pre-loved shoes and at one, in particular, noticed how the gogos – when told they could choose five pairs of shoes for themselves – immediately went to the children’s section and so selflessly chose shoes first for the grandchildren in their care.

Chairman of The Robin Hood Foundation, Cindy Norcott, said the Gogo Bags is always filled with an assortment of clothing and they have seen the happiness on the gogos’ faces when they find something in the bag just for them.

“So we thought we could humbly ask people to donate as we all have at least one item of clothing in our cupboards we have not worn in forever.

“We are appealing to our community to have a spring clean and donate any great condition pre-loved clothing, blanket, towels, scarves, hats, beaded jewellery for our Clothes for Africa drive,” said Norcott.

Image Insured is an official drop-off point for Robin Hood’s Mahala Market campaign, so pop in and visit Faye, Megan and the ladies at Shop 29, Delcairn Centre, 12 – 14 Village Road, Kloof.
