Don’t build houses under power lines, warns City

People who build houses directly under power lines are not only breaking the law, but they are putting themselves at serious risk.

DUE to high risk of electrocution, the City has warned people of building houses under power lines.

According to the City’s acting head of electricity unit, Maxwell Mthembu, people living under the lines are in danger of being electrocuted should the cables fall and land on homes.

“Strong winds can also increase the chances of line breaks.”

eThekwini Municipality will begin an education campaign to educate people about the dangers of building houses under power lines.

“People who build houses directly under power lines are not only breaking the law, but they are putting themselves at serious risk, as these lines carry power of a very high voltage.

“In the event of natural disasters such as lightning, storms and strong winds, the chances of lines breaking are increased, thereby increasing the risk of injury. Therefore, the City strongly appeals to the residents to refrain from building houses underneath power lines,” said Mthembu.

Officials will be visiting various communities to engage with public on the dangers of building under the power lines and illegal electricity connections.
