‘Paw-fect’ place to grab your reading fix

Help support the Feral Cat Feeding Scheme by making a donation or purchasing a book or two from the new store.

IF you were wondering where Steve and Toni’s Bookshop and Second-hand Bookstore has moved to, head to the Salamanca Centre along Maryvale Road in Westville for your reading fix.

The mother and son duo have built up a large collection of books which are sold to raise much-needed funds for their cat sanctuary and Feral Cat Feeding Scheme in Durban.

“We stay in Westville and our storage facility was continuously being broken into and the goods we would sell in our white elephant were being stolen. We lost thousands of Rands worth of items,” said a saddened Toni Pitches.

They have since poured every last spare penny they have into their newest shop and said this was make or break for their organisation.

“This is quite honestly everything we have and we have tried so hard to bring in the necessary funds,” said Toni.

The objective of the Feral Cat Feeding Scheme is to curb the over population of feral cats in Durban and surrounds.

One of the 34 cats the family looks after at the sanctuary costs about R500 per month as it is diabetic.

“We have to give the cats good quality food and the sanctuary is open for other cats to come through. All but two of these cats have been sterilised as they are still too young,” said Toni.

If you want to get involved with the work done by Toni and Steve, volunteer your time or services.

The sanctuary is in need of repairs, cat food donations are welcome as well as cash donations to help cover the cost of a sterilisation, which is R400 per cat.

Steven and Toni hope to open a small coffee bar for patrons, should the funding become available or a donation of a coffee maker is made.

The store is open from 8am to 6pm, seven days a week.
