Councillors promote Constitution awareness

A handful of councillors and activists spent their morning creating awareness for the protection of the South African Constitution.

THE West Durban councillors for the Democratic Alliance and local activists celebrated the International Day of Democracy by taking to the streets with placards creating awareness for the protection of the South African Constitution.

Marlaine Nair, the DA PR councillor for ward 13 and 15 said, “The International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity for us here in South Africa to review the state of our democracy, measure how far we have come and analyse the direction in which we are headed.”

The Constitution was signed into law by Nelson Mandela in 1996 and enshrined in the Constitution is the Bill of Rights, which protects the freedom of all people who live in South Africa.

“Familiarise yourselves with the Constitution so that you will be able to protect your rights and the rights of others. Two rights that stand out are the right to freedom of speech, which refers to the freedom to express one’s views and opinions. The right to the freedom of the press refers to the freedom to print or broadcast news freely, both without interference from government.

“It is the duty of every South African to fight for the preservation of the Constitution and the protection of our democracy,” concluded Nair.
