Get your wipers ready for summer rain

Wipers are relatively inexpensive, but make all the difference between clear visibility and an accident waiting to happen.

Summer is on the horizon and there is no better time for motorists to get their cars summer-ready to avoid those wiper glitches in heavy rains.

Director of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) Pieter Niemand suggested checking your windscreen wipers, air conditioning unit, oil and tyres before trips.

“Why wait until you are caught in the first spring rains to realise that your windscreen wipers are old and need to be changed. Get pro-active and check your vehicle now so you are prepared for the weather changes ahead.”

He also said although wipers were relatively inexpensive, they make all the difference between clear visibility and an accident waiting to happen.

The air conditioner is just as important to check. He said many drivers did not make use of their air conditioning units during the winter so they may have built up dirt that could hamper performance.

“Ask your mechanic to check the unit if you suspect there is a problem. It’s worth getting the unit checked before the summer heat hits,” said Niemand.

He advises drivers to budget for a service ahead of the December rush and use accredited workshops. By using an accredited workshop, you can be assured that the work is guaranteed. “If you are unsure whether your local workshop is accredited ask to see the accreditation certificate or contact an industry body such as MIWA.”
