Join the salute of hope on Sunflower Day

Funds raised will offer the hope of life to patients in need of a life-saving blood stem cell transplant.

MORE than 200 000 people are expected to join the Sunflower Fund’s salute to patients and survivors by donning the funky, new-look “TOPES” (Tubes of Hope) for this year’s Sunflower Day on Friday, 15 September.

You can also do something to make a difference to patients needing a blood stem cell transplant. The action is simple: purchase your TOPE (Tube of Hope) and celebrate Sunflower Day.

This trendy and multi-purpose accessory product available in six vibrant colours can be worn as a headband, mask, scarf, cap or arm band. TOPES are available at Pick n Pay stores across the country and Namibia or online at Zando for R25 each.

The theme of this year’s campaign is Its ordinary people who do the most extraordinary things that make a real difference.

Alana James, CEO of The Sunflower Fund said: “To see our TOPES being worn with pride is not just an honour for us, but a salute to our survivors, our fighters, our memories of loved ones; it is a show of support, a symbol of Hope.”

The Sunflower Fund is currently also running their school’s competition. Youngsters across SA are able to play their part by helping to raise funds and awareness for the need to recruit donors for stem cell donation.

“I love our Sunflower day campaign; it serves as a reminder to the nation of one of our very critical goals: to ensure that South Africa has an ethnically diverse source of potential stem cell donors, who are committed to help save lives”, added James.

Funds raised will offer the hope of life to patients in need of a life-saving blood stem cell transplant. With more than 160 000 TOPES sold last year, the Sunflower Fund were able to recruit and register another 1,488 potential blood stem cell donors onto the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR).

This year , they aim to sell 200 000 and are encouraging both loyal and new supporters to rally together and get on board to help them reach their goal.
