Whizz kids ace maths challenge

Smart Mental Arithmetic students did well achieving five bronze medals, five silver medals, seven gold medals, four champion trophies and two champion of champion trophies.

MORE than 23 children from Smart Mental Artihmetic in Malvern participated in the Abagility Maths club annual KZN Regional Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship on Saturday, 19 August at St Agnes Auditorium in Kloof.

According to Smart Mental Artihmetic’s Shaila Christian, in this event, each child had six minutes to write an exam with up to 40 sums using their abacus to do the calculations, and a second exam which they were give up to 40 sums and a time of two minutes to do mental maths calculations.

There were up to 240 participants competing in the event, ranging from Grade 00 to Grade 8. “It was a very exciting event, and everyone performed at their best. We are proud of them all,” said Christian.

Saien Pillay took third place and Dante’ Lazarus took first place in the Junior Mental Maths Dictation Challenge, and Dante’ Lazarus took 2nd place in the Junior Abacus Dictation Challenge.

“Their performances were spectacular and we are very proud of them. Many of the students will participate at the National Championship that will be held in Horison, Roodepoort in Gauteng on Saturday, 21 October,” said Christian.
