Michaelhouse to honour Themba Dloti on Friday

The Michaelhouse community will unite with Themba's family at the memorial to celebrate his life.

A MEMORIAL service to celebrate Themba Dloti’s life will be held in the Michaelhouse Chapel, this Friday, 8 September at noon.

Dloti died in the tragic Michaelhouse bus accident near Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday afternoon.

Dloti was part of one of the four U16 soccer teams travelling to Kearsney College in Botha’s Hill when the Michaelhouse bus experienced a blow-out going down Townhill near Pietermaritzburg.

Michaelhouse released information about the memorial on their Facebook page yesterday and thanked the various staff, parents, old boys and community for their assistance, prayers and condolences.

“We have just come from a chapel service presided over by Bishop Dino Gabriel where we commemorated the life of Themba Dloti and where we raised in prayer the men of Michaelhouse who were hurt in yesterday’s [Tuesday’s] accident. “

The post went on to extend a deep gratitude to literally thousands of people, schools, and organisations who have in turn extended their support and love to our community during this time.

“It has been a deeply humbling experience. Thank you to those who were directly involved yesterday at the scene of the crash, at hospitals, running around Pietermaritzburg in the service of others, counselling, talking, fetching, carrying, offering accommodation and organising. Thank you to the Old Michaelhousians and parents who as doctors or nurses were still involved in operations until the very early hours of this morning. They were magnificent. As were the general staff of these institutions. Your support is greatly appreciated.”

Most of the boys and staff involved in the crash have been discharged from hospital. However, there are still 13 boys and one staff member in hospital. Some of whom is believed to remain in hospital for some time given the seriousness of their injuries.

“The overriding memory that I have of yesterday [Wednesday], apart from a sense of tragedy, was of the brotherhood and support of humans, by humans, for humans.” concluded the post.
