Highbury spreads hope for Sunflower Fund

Although the official Sunflower Day takes place on 15 September celebrated it on Spring Day as this is a day that symbolizes new life.

HIGHBURY Preparatory School celebrated Sunflower Day together with Spring Day on Friday, 1 September in a special way that showed solidarity towards the brave fight that children with life-threatening blood disorders face daily.

Highbury sold 740 Sunflower Fund ‘topes’ at school, raising R18 500 to assist The Sunflower Fund in increasing the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR).

On Spring Day, learners went to school wearing their topes as headbands, masks, scarves, armbands and the smaller children even managed to wear them as dresses.

Although the official Sunflower Day takes place on 15 September, Belinda Willows, Head of Foundation Phase at Highbury, said, “It was most fitting to celebrate Sunflower Day on Spring Day as this is a day that symbolises new life, new beginnings and the restoration of life.

Highbury learners and staff all worked together to build the word HOPE on the tennis court, using the topes. It was a real team effort and the outcome was a surprise for parents as they drove past the tennis courts on the way to fetch their boys at the end of Spring Day.

Highbury moms will wash all the topes and sew them into beautiful drawstring bags that will be gifted to the Robin Hood Foundation.
