One dead, 47 injured in Michaelhouse bus accident

Traffic is heavily affected in the area due to this incident.

A BUS transporting four U16 soccer teams to Kearsney College in Botha’s Hill experienced a blow-out going down Townhill near Pietermaritzburg and flipped onto its side a short while ago.

According to a post by Rector Greg Theron on the Michaelhouse Facebook page, 47 people are in the process of being transported to hospital.

ER24 paramedics confirmed that one person has died.

Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson said paramedics, along with several other services, arrived on the scene and found a school bus lying on its side on the side of the road. Numerous children had already climbed out of the vehicle and were found walking around on the scene.

“Two children were found to be in a critical condition while approximately 46 others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Paramedics immediately treated the patients and provided the seriously and critically injured with advanced life support interventions,” said Meiring when he arrived at the scene.

Traffic is heavily affected in the area due to this incident.  Local authorities are currently on the scene to investigate the cause of this accident.

Michelle Dennis, editor of the Highway Mail said: “Our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with the injured people, their families, friends and the school.”
