Tyler inspired to help CHOC

When Tyler saw how sick his dad got from the stem cell treatment and learned that little children also had to endure this, he wanted to make a difference.

TYLER Sinclair, a Grade 1 learner at Winston Park Primary School, is inspired to help children with cancer.

His dad has Multiple Sclerosis and underwent a stem cell transplant.

He was in isolation for 28 days undergoing aggressive chemotherapy which kills off the entire immune system and the stem cell transplant helps to rebuild a new one that hopefully works with the body instead of against it (the same treatment children suffering from Leukemia and non-Hodgkin Lymphoma undergo).

When Tyler saw how sick his dad got from the treatment and he learned that little children, sometimes much younger than himself, also endure this and sometimes alone, he wanted to make a difference.

He learned of CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation SA) and the CHOC houses and how they support these children and their families through these very difficult times – he knew this was where he wanted to help.

He got his mission off the ground by first doing chores, reaching out to friends and family, and going out of his comfort zone to get people to sponsor him doing an event. He hosted two gajiga obstacle races and Tyler went on to raise just over R10 000 for CHOC.

Winston Park Primary School has acknowledged Tyler’s achievements and chose him as its Star of the Month.
