Dr Bowley to take St Benedict to new heights

Being an old girl will be an advantage for St Benedict's new principal, Dr Barbara Bowley.

FOR Dr Barbara Bowley, being appointed as the new St Benedict School principal is like returning home.

Bowley is a St Benedict former learner and knows the high standard the school sets and hopes to raise the bar as she said there is always room for improvement.

She has been in the teaching industry for 28 years and said being bossy from a young age contributed to the passion she has for teaching.

As an Old Girl, Bowley is familiar with the school and clued up about the minds of the learners.

“I was a learner at this school when it was still known as Pinetown Convent. We were taught by nuns and I was one of the naughty ones who knew all the hiding places. I did warn the children on the first day that ‘I am watching them’.

Bowley studied at UKZN, formerly Natal University, and started her career at St Johns DSG teaching maths and PE.

From there she taught maths and PE at Clifton College and left the school after 19 years as an HOD to accept her new post at St Benedict.

After obtaining her PhD in Philosophy of Education, Bowley felt like she needed another challenge.

“I am retiring in 15 years so when I saw this post I knew that this was what I needed, it is going to be challenging but I will give it my all.”

She said being a teacher is a fantastic job and there is a new adventure everyday.

“What I enjoy most about my job is interacting with the children, there is always new talent and children are so honest and if they say, ‘mam you look beautiful today’, they truly mean it,” she said.

She added that St Benedict is always striving for excellence and has massive potential and she is going to focus on that to take the school to new heights in every aspect.
