Learners take saving water to new heights
Rain water will be collected from the school gutters and then plumbed back into the toilet piping system.
ATHOLL Heights Primary School in Westville has taken a major step toward water conservation by installing three large water tanks on site.
The average school uses approximately 300 000 litres of water per month on flushing toilets alone, and Atholl Heights principal, Lloyd Wing, wanted to see his school reduce this figure.
“It doesn’t make sense to be using so much water for flushing toilets. We realised our roofing space is collecting thousands of litres of water every time it rains, and we should be using that water at least for our toilets,” said Wing.

SBS Tanks were called in to install the tanks at three sites around the school premises, where the water could easily be collected from the gutters, and then plumbed back into the toilet piping system. The Grade 7 learners were invited to get hands-on with the building of the tank, and were shown the technology that goes into the SBS Tanks product.
James Preston, marketing manager at SBS Tanks, said Atholl Heights Primary School is delighted at the prospect of saving 300 000 litres of water every month, and encourage all schools, companies and households to think of how they can save water too.
