Domestic workers campaign promotes healthy living

The campaign includes a family fun day for everyone.

ESPANINI Health Services Centre has organised a walk and a family fun day which is aimed at encouraging domestic workers to take care of their health while spending time with their employers.

Organiser of the event, Xola Sibisi, said it is unfortunate that domestic workers take care of our home and families and in most cases they do not get time to check up on their own health.

The fun day, hosted in conjunction with the Department of Heath, will be held on Saturday, 19 August at Africa Medical Centre, 150 Mariannridge Drive, Caversham Glen next to Pick n Pay.

“There have been so many instances where helpers discover an illness at a critical stage for which they would have received help if they had a check-up early.”

She said on the day, attendees will receive a free medical screening including eye tests, cholesterol, HIV testing, blood pressure and blood sugar level.

“There will be professional nurses and doctors from Africa Medical Centre who have partnered with us to make this day a success.

“We will also be referring patients to their nearest clinics for medications if need be and those who want to do pap smears and cancer screenings as we won’t be able to do that at the venue,” she said.

Sibisi urged employers to support their domestic workers and accompany them on this day and everyone from the Highway area and surrounds is invited.

The day will start with a 5km fun run for the whole family to raise awareness of health challenges faced by domestic workers and will cost R10 a person, those under 12 years participate for free.

There will be refreshments and goodie bags for the walkers.

Registration for the fun run will start at 8am and the fun day will continue with games and entertainment.
