Pinetown jogger was a selfless man

Alastair's memorial service will held on Wednesday, 9 August at 11am at the Umbilo Church of Christ.

A PINETOWN man who collapsed and died while jogging on Thursday night was identified as Alastair Diack (39).

His younger brother, Raymond Diack, said he received news of his brother’s passing on Friday night from one of the trustees from the block of flats where he lived after numerous attempts to trace his relatives.

“Because my brother lived alone and no one had reported him missing, it was hard to trace his relatives. His girlfriend, Venessa, lives in Johannesburg,” said Raymond.

Raymond described Alastair as a great believer in God and said his faith was very important to him. “My brother put others first and was always eager to share and willing to give even when he did not have much to spare.”

When asked what he will miss the most about Alastair, he said, “his dry and unique sense of humour.”
He said although the news of his brother’s passing came as a shock and is difficult to accept, knowing that he is now in a better place keeps the family strong.

“We are heartbroken but we will treasure the good times we had with him.”

Raymond thanked the trustees of the block of flats where Alastair lived and the GlenPark Neighbourhood Watch who tried to save Alastair when he collapsed.

“We are truly grateful to everyone for the incredible support and love we’ve been shown. A special thanks to one of the trustees who went to each complex to try and identify him.”

Alastair’s memorial service will be held on Wednesday, 9 August at 11am at the Umbilo Church of Christ, corner of Umbilo and Allenby Gardens Road. (same venue as Glenwood Christian School).
