High-kicking action for TMC’s Connor

Thomas More College's primary school SPAR Star of the Month - August 2017.

CONNOR Harris, a Grade 7 learner at Thomas More College, is the primary school’s SPAR Star of the Month.

Connor started karate at Highway JKA when he was seven years old. He has always loved the sport and enjoys competing. He has been a member of the KZN Provincial team since 2015 and represents the province at national events.

This year he was placed first three times and nabbed a second place in the provincial championships. At nationals, he took first place, two second place awards and one third place title.

Connor is currently ranked third in the country for his age group for kumite (fighting). This year he was selected as part of the South African team and was awarded his Protea colours. He participated in the Africa Zone 5 championships in Mozambique in June, where he won a bronze medal for kata in the Male 12/13 year age group, against competitors from across South Africa.

In August, Connor will again represent South Africa in the JKA World Karate championships in Limerick, Ireland. Connor attributes his success to his coach, Sensei Leonardo Ciutto, from Highway JKA.

While Connor trains very hard at karate, he also enjoys rock-climbing and hockey at Thomas More College.
