Basketball court now in session

Waterfall College opened its first basketball court to much fanfare last week.

WATERFALL College may have one of the most spectacularly positioned basketball courts in the country with its breath-taking view over the Valley of 1000 Hills.

The gorgeous new facility was officially opened last week.

At the opening ceremony, parent and sponsor, Wayne Barr, said, “When my son joined the school, I immediately saw the need for a basketball court. It has been a pleasure to complete this project. As a small school, Waterfall College can excel in a game such as basketball. Children of all ages and sizes can play this sport. I look forward to seeing games played here for fun and for some serious competitive sports tournaments too.”

Waterfall College will be selecting teams to play in the Highway Basketball league. The new court is a standard size with multi-use markings for both netball and basketball. It also has spectator stands, floodlights for night games, a scoreboard, water points and is surrounded by an indigenous plant feature which complements the eco-friendly campus.

The school’s principal, Jeanette van der Merwe, and head of sport, Greg Kyle, joined Wayne Barr and his wife Shelley in cutting the blue ribbon to declare the court open for play.

“We are so privileged to have our own new basketball court. We have converted a scruffy little car park into a beautiful sports facility. Thank you so much to all the sponsors of this significant project,” said Jeanette.

The title sponsor of the new basketball court is 6Bar Construction. The major sponsors are Metier Mixed Concrete (for the concrete) and X-Rad Trailers (for the stands). The minor sponsors are Décor 8, Shaves, Midlands Signage (for the scoreboard), Stump Terminator, Super Digger, Northside Electrical and DL Flooring.
