St Mary’s musos create magic

This talented duo were excited to perform with the KZN Youth Wind Band in New York recently.

TWO Grade 10 learners at St Mary’s DSG, Jennifer Stead and Rachel Luyt, recently had the privilege of playing in the International Wind Band Festival as part of the KZN Youth Wind Band in New York.

Jennifer and Rachel were excited to have the opportunity to play in the grand Carnegie Hall.

The band played three pieces in the competition against bands from Hawaii and across the USA and the group won gold overall and was the only South African band in the competition.

Jennifer plays the oboe in the band and has played the instrument for six years and also enjoys playing the piano.

Rachel plays the alto saxophone in the band, an instrument she first picked up five years ago.

She also plays the cello and piano. Rachel is also a valued member of the St Mary’s marimba band, worship team and African music ensemble group.

The girls practise with the KZN Youth Wind Band every Saturday and plan to play for as long as possible.
