Flames of giving burn bright at memorial braai

This year, the chosen charity at the Jim Burton Memorial event was the St Martin's Children's Home.

MORE than 60 friends and family gathered for the annual bring and braai with a difference. Each family brought through a bag of groceries and a few toys for the St Martin’s Children’s Home.

The Jim Burton Memorial evening is currently in its seventh year and is a way to give back to the community. “We each get to put the name of a charity into a hat and then we draw one, this way we get to choose and help out a different charity every year. This is in remembrance of my father because he was just a fantastic dad and this is a great way to honour his memory,” said the event founder, Chris Burton.

This year, as the night time chill began to set in, the group fired up four potjies and the delicious aroma spread throughout the garden as the adults huddled together for a catch up session while the children jumped on the jumping castle.

Ishara Poodhun, the director of St Martin’s Children’s Home, said the centre lives off of faith and depends on grace to get by each month and the donation was a mammoth help to the non-profit organisation. “We have 75 children in our care between the ages of three and 18 and this donation will go a long way for us. The children are going to be so excited! We make sure the children are well fed but we do operate within a budget, so to them, some of the food that is donated here will be considered luxury items to them,” said Ishara.

Both Ishara and Chris challenged the Highway community to host similar events to help support the vast array of local charities in the area.
